A (not so) Banner Day...
I’ve noticed a disturbing online trend. I cruise the internet regularly looking for sites to link up with. What I do is if I find a site to solicit a link exchange from, a lot of times I'll solicit an exchange from their partners besides. So every once in a while I happen upon an escort service website. And when I look at their banner link page(s) (and most times I happen upon the site itself via a banner link), all I see are banners featuring big name porn stars. What gives?
My problem with online escort agency banners is two-fold: first of all, they do not employ the porn star nor do they offer any of her goods and services. Secondly, while I understand that escort agencies - for the most part - are not insinuating that such porn stars are employed by them, such advertising can be a bit misleading. I guess they’re selling two fantasies :
1. How beautiful their women are; and
2. The great sexual experience that awaits you. In effect, they’re saying it’ll be like making love to a porn star.
I’ll grant them the first fantasy. I’ve been with certain escorts and they can hold their own with porn stars in the looks department. And just as a brief aside, porn stars, in reality, don’t look like porn stars. They have teams of beauty experts that work with them on shoots. However, I can’t grant them the benefit of the doubt on the second fantasy. No one makes love like a porn star. Just ask Jenna Jameson.
Listen, I’d be the first to tell you that the banners I created for my site all feature top porn stars. So, at first glance, I might sound a little hypocritical. But I’m actually selling these pornstars’ products.
And it’s not just escort agency banners sporting the mega-porn star look. I couldn’t tell you the number of times that I’ve found a flier under the windshield wipers of my car advertising some Saturday night extravaganza at some local club. And who‘s pictured on the flier? Adriana Sage (I must admit, I myself have a banner with her likeness), Daisy, Lacey Duvalle. Mind you, I live in the Middle Atlantic region on the east coast. We rarely get two porn stars out here at the same time, let alone three. And this “local” club is not even in New York. So right away you’ve just halved the odds on your porn star sightings.
My sentiments on this subject, I feel, were largely vindicated by a recent event. Tera Patrick is suing a Los Angeles escort agency for misuse of her image in one of its newspaper ads. It seems that the ad, featuring her likeness, implied that she herself was available for outcalls. The porn star not only denied the implication, she also said that she felt a lot of her colleagues’ popularity was being misused.
If you - as an escort agency - are going to feature a porn star prominently on your banner, go small (in terms of name and face recognition). Don’t insinuate, overtly or subconsciously, that some insanely popular starlet with legions of fans are now “servicing” those fans. Unless, of course, that starlet is Vicky Vette. :)
