HBO's Pornucopia

Welcome to my blog page! This is the inaugural entry of many, I hope, to come. While I will strive to update this page with a new entry every day of the working week, that might be a little on the optimistic side. I will try to make a minimum of two entries a week. What I intend to do with this page is to speak frankly about goods and services near and dear to me. Namely, porn and sex toys. That being said, I’ll not waste any more time.

I finally got a chance to see the first installment of Pornucopia on HBO. I thought It was good. I recognized a lot of the models at the World Modeling Agency, where said models are recruited. Somehow, I was expecting some big, multi-story edifice not some non-descript building down in the San Fernando Valley.

I thought the funniest line in the whole piece was given by this guy who was commenting on the Adult Video News awards. He said (I’m paraphrasing) that adult stars are genuinely happy to win these awards; they go onstage to make their acceptance speech and they start thanking their mother, father, church pastor (ok, the last one I threw in for effect), etc….

Most of the piece was about Jenna Haze. She announced that she wasn’t going to do boy-girl scenes anymore, because she had a new boyfriend. Another person interviewed said he expected her video sales to decline as a result. That got me thinking about other porn starlets who swore off straight scenes because they had gotten attached. How were their video sales affected?

For a quick sampling, I sent emails to over 20 studio heads and producers , posing the question: With all other things being equal, do adult stars sell more hetero DVDs than lesbian DVDs? I wanted a simple yes or no answer. I received 3 (special thanks to the people at asianbootleg.com) responses to my question, all in the affirmative. I knew porn execs were notoriously tight-lipped about their revenue streams, but only 3? I guess I shouldn't cross my fingers, hoping to hear from the rest.

Obviously, 3 does not a trend make. Nevertheless, maybe I’ve had an over inflated opinion of the popularity of pretty lesbians on video. I’d always thought famous porn stars like Jenna Jameson sold just as many lesbian videos as heterosexual videos, if not more. Jenna Jameson, much like her namesake, does not do any boy-girl scenes anymore (sort of). The former is now happily married, and only has on-screen sex with her husband Jay Grdina.

Jenna Jameson has already left her mark in the adult industry, for her part. In regards to Miss Haze, I’d be interested to know 2 things:
1. Whether this does ,in fact , hurt her video sales; and
2. Whether That would, subsequently, be grounds for her to return to straight-themed content.
Stay-tuned.
